Providing Support Through a Person’s Dying Process

My name is Denise Brandon of Soul's Gentle Journey in the Fraser Valley, British Columbia. I am an end of life doula who assists dying persons and families through end of life care at home. I also conduct vigil services and provide respite care for the caregivers. I would be honored to provide the support you need to make your death be as meaningful as your life has been.

My Motivation Toward Practicing End-of-Life Care

Statistics show that 80% of people would prefer to die at home surrounded by their loved ones, but only 20% can. These figures prompted me to follow my heart’s mission and guide individuals through the dying process.

Advanced Care Directives

I believe that facing death and dying for yourself or a loved one is overwhelming and emotional. Many decisions will need to be made. It is my objective to assist you and present you with all the options available. We will compile a written document so that all those involved will have access to it and changes can be made at any time.

Respite Care

One area that is often overlooked is self‑care. Looking after a loved one who is nearing the end of life is physically and emotionally draining. I know that if you don’t take some time to step away to look after yourself, it can lead to extreme burnout. Self-care isn’t selfish. Whether it is for an hour, an afternoon, or more, I will be able to step in and provide comfort and compassionate care while you recharge.

Planning Vigils and Active Vigil Care

Some families may prefer to consult an end‑of‑life doula to help plan a vigil, while others may request to have the doula as part of the vigil. This can be beneficial as there can be some aspects of the dying process that loved ones are not prepared to face. Having someone present that can comfort and reassure them in those times can be invaluable.
